I wanted lots of bright colours but not too bright, I wanted something of the night about it. I wanted this painting to look real, like a bar scene anywhere in the world, and I wanted the woman smoking a big cigar which states ‘I don’t give a damn what you think, I do what I want to do’.
I wanted the three characters looking a little shady, a little of the dark, if they talk at all it’s in whispers from the side of their mouths, she’s uttering something to one and something different to the other.
I loved painting this scene it’s a bar late at night, a lady of dubious character enjoying a cigar and a glass of wine with friends in a bar, I say dubious as I’m not quite sure what’s she’s doing with her right hand, whatever it is she looks bored, in fact they all look a little lost and something on their left is attracting their attention. The guy with the cigarette in his mouth probably has a little more then tobacco in there. I love the colours and the characters, who knows what they are thinking or who wants to. I’ll leave that up to you.
