100 year market Maybe should have been called ‘Blessing of the 100 year market’. Although the 100 year market has obviously being going a long time, from time to time it is blessed by the Monks as Thais believe this brings good luck. My thoughts when I was painting this was of such a blessing. The top right hand side is the entrance to the actual market, which is the part that was blessed by the Monks. The curtain of ribbons either side of the entrance would have been drawn back by the Monks and the Monks would add gold leaf on the boarding above the entrance for luck. At the walk up to the market which is full of people coming and going also hawkers selling their wares, the rickshaw man having a snooze in his rickshaw. It was painted mainly with trowel using only oil and on canvas.
